Our Campus
Guru Nanak Charitable Trust (Gurmat Bhawan) carries out its services from three double storey buildings. In addition there is a kitchen and storage block and a playground.
Main building
The main building, on the Northside came up in 1989 on a 600 sq. yards plot, donated in 1987 by Sardar Bhagwan Singh Sekhon of Dakha. It now houses a library, de-addiction centre and offices. Religious functions and music training sessions are conducted on the first floor.
Second Building
As the Trust acquired more land, a kitchen block and storage area was constructed on the eastern side. In 1992-1993, a new double storey building had to be constructed on the southernside for a bigger de-addiction centre, a primary school, Tailoring classes for girls, a Health Club for youth and a small orphanage for young children.
Daphne May Block
As the projects became more popular, we felt the need for more space to accommodate them. As an answer to our wishes and prayers, we started receiving aid, mostly from unexpected quarters. Mr. Daljit Singh, of UK and from a nearby village Bhanohar, a regular associate and well versed with the projects being run at Gurmat Bhawan, visited us one day and narrated the story of this amazing lady Ms Daphne May. She had passed away some time ago and had bequeathed all her worldly possessions in his (Mr Daljit Singh) name. The noble man that he is, he decided to donate all to various charities, Gurmat Bhawan, being familiar and near his native village being one of them. We asked for his permission to name the new block after Ms May’s name to which he readily agreed.
Another senior trustee, Mr Gurbachan Singh Sidhu of Village Kaonke Kalan and from UK sold his ancestral house at his village and donated the whole amount to this Trust. Unfortunately he couldn’t witness the building, the one he had decided to spend his time at.
Mr Balwant Singh Saggu, from Glasgow and of Village Hissowal, associated with Gurmat Bhawan way before its inception also contributed substantially towards the construction of the new block.
Mr Zafar Chaudhary of Habitat Architects Ludhiana, a well known name in the field of Architecture at national and international level, designed the block, totally FREE OF COST.
Lastly and definitely not the least, thank you Sartaj Ghuman for decorating the giant Mural Wall with your paintings depicting the principles of our Trust, and redoing it again!!
Thank you everyone for bringing about this marvellous structure. The ground floor houses five modern and comfortable residential units, a well stocked kitchen and a large well ventilated common hall. Our volunteers from out of town, our guests and the medical team during the Eye camps usually stay here. The first floor is dedicated to Stitching and Computer classes.
